DEWITT, Mich. (WILX) - CORRECTION: Masks will be required indoors for students, faculty or staff in DeWitt Public Schools.

School officials announced the decision in a letter to parents along with other back to school plans.

“We are in the midst of a very challenging time as we begin another year of unknowns, and a variety of emotions come into play as we all want our children to have a successful, happy, and healthy year,” said DeWitt Public Schools Superintendent Shanna Spickard in a letter shared on social media.

The move comes as schools throughout the state are scrambling to adjust to the new realities of the delta variant. Decisions must be made before the start of the school year-- imminent from the perspective of administrators trying to put the gears of policy in place-- and the new variant has complicated the equation.

For DeWitt, masks will be recommended, though not required, when Clinton County is at low to moderate risk. Masks will be required for kindergarten through eighth grade, as well as the staff who work with them, when the county is at substantial risk of transmission. When the county is at a high risk of transmission masks will be required for everyone.

Recently Clinton County was categorized as being at high risk, prompting the move to require masks until the transmission rates change.

For Spickard, she said there is nothing she wants more than to keep students, faculty and staff safe.

“As a parent of a recent graduate with a compromised immune system and lung issues, I understand how frightening the virus is for many of us,” said Spickard. “I charge us to all come together to make the 21-22 school year a happy and healthy year for students.”

Those wishing to visit any school buildings will also be required to wear masks indoors. Students will be required to wear masks on school buses as well. However, masks won’t be required during recess.
